We must never let our emotions get the better of us doing so is either a sign of weakness, one that diminishes our well-earned respect, or a mark of combativeness, which will cause people to say we’re irrational.

I loved the way that Sosa seamlessly incorporates conversations about race and what it means to be a Latinx woman in a world dominated by white men and the eye-opening conversations about how that changes the way Lina reacts to things. Sosa easily intertwines the two when Max meets her family and friends and begins to understand her upbringing and the reasoning behind the way she approaches life and work. This story is as much about Lina and her family and the responsibility she feels to be successful to make their sacrifices worth while as it is about the romance with Max.

I was intrigued enough to pick up the book but I wasn’t convinced any sort of HEA would make sense based on the history of the characters, but somehow Mia Sosa and her lovely characters convinced me it’s possible. I wasn’t sure what to expect from this book because of the whole love interest being the brother of the ex-fiance thing making it extra messy and complicated. Love doesn’t operate in the abstract, whether it’s romantic or not. Of course, she picks Max, with full intention of ignoring him and doing all of the work herself, but apparently he has other ideas. And things go from bad to worse when she’s expected to work with one of the brothers on her pitch for the job. The last thing she expects is to see Andrew, her ex-fiance, and his brother, Max, who she believes is responsible for the break-up a few years later at the most important job interview of her career.
